iBooks [iPhone apps iLike]

27 Jun

I love reading, and with my chronically late husband, I often find myself with 5-10 minutes waiting time with nothing to do. Fortunately, my iPhone has become an ebook reader with first Stanza, and now iBooks.

Stanza was always awesome. I just found that finding titles in Stanza format was limiting.

And now iBooks has the ability to convert PDF files – it’s gotta be a fave in the eBook application game (at the moment, anyway – I’m a fickle consumer).

Search for iBook in the Apple store.

Now that I’ve filed everything… [iphone OS4]

The stacks have reduced 6 pages on my iPhone to 3,

Where did I put it all???

Power Cables & Batteries for Old Laptops [IT Supplies in Singapore]

22 Jun

If you’re like me, then you tend to have a few computers and laptops where you’ve upgraded, and you pass these older models on to family and friends. Unfortunately with this, some components start to fail, and rather than throwing out a perfectly working piece of  equipment, it’s good if you can find a supplier of components that will assist you in extending the working life of your old laptop.

RICKYTAN.COM is on level 4, Shop 80 of Sim Lim Square, and Ricky himself will often serve you.

I recently purchased a power supply for a 3-year-old Compaq computer, and was told that he has batteries for my model as well.

For best results, bring your laptop in, so that he can test on the spot so that you walk away with a working piece of equipment.

NumberKey Free [Works with my Mac!]

21 Jun

If you use the Bluetooth wireless keyboard on the Mac, then you will be missing a number pad. You have a few options to get this – you can get a USB number pad, or look for a Bluetooth one… or use your iPhone / iPod Touch!

It requires installed software on your Mac, but I don’t find it too much of an overhead, and you can turn it on only when you need it.

At US$1.99, it’s far cheaper than going out and buying another piece of hardware.

Get the NumberKey App and Connector at the vendor website.

TV Guide @ SG [Free iPhone apps iLike]

20 Jun

Dearest loves TV. I remember when we were really broke and the one thing we couldn’t let slide, EVER, was the cable TV subscription. It was the big thing that DH did after a long day at work – one hour after working at home to unwind. I have no problem with that – he earned it!

I have found, however, that he hates me scanning the channels while he’s watching a program (unfortunately that’s not a 2-way street – he can do it while I’m watching, but that’s another story ;-) )… so I’ve got this nifty app that let’s me scan through all my favourite cable and free-to-air programs here in Singapore.

AND I can do it without bugging dearest! AND I can search!

For those that have gone through the recent shuffle of channel numbering with Starhub in Singapore, it has the updated channel numbers… which I find convenient coz I can’t remember them yet!!

Download TV Guide @ SG for updated TV programmes in Singapore from the App Store.

Project 365 [Free iPhone apps iLike]

19 Jun

I love taking photos.

This app is like a daily diary of photos that I have taken, which becomes a bit of a memoir of what I have done over time.

If you install the free iPhone Flickr app, which allows you to download images from your Flickr account, then you can add other photos to the ones that you take with your iPhone to fill out the month.

For example, yesterday I didn’t take any photos with my iPhone, but I took a few with my camera, which will be uploaded to my Flickr account. I can then download them to my iPhone using the Flickr app, and add them to Project 365.

Why bother?

Because it’s a good way to show friends and it also allows me to upload to my Facebook account quite nicely.

Get Project 365 free from the iTunes Store.

MyPaint Free [Free iPhone Apps iLike]

18 Jun

I love to doodle.

It doesn’t mean I’m an amazing artist, or anything, but if I’m bored, I will sometimes just draw. I also like to draw when I’m listening to a lecture or something… my lecture notes at uni were full of doodles.

Fortunately there are a few apps on the iPhone that allow me to do this and destroy the evidence so that my teachers don’t think that I’m not paying attention. Why wasn’t this around when I was in uni???? ;-)

MyPaint Free has many tools, many colours, the ability to import images from your image library and draw on them. You can change the width of the brush, and save the final image to many different locations.

Download MyPaint Free to doodle on the go!

RSS on iMac [Gruml and Google Reader]

17 Jun

Another app that has caught my attention is Gruml.

I get most of my news through my RSS reader – and being able to integrate with Google Reader is a key feature… that way I can read on my iPhone (for which I use MobileRSS – both for its synchronising capability and its social abilities) and have the ‘read’ stories removed from my desktop app… like email, who wants to delete things twice??

Gruml simply allowed me to enter in my Google Reader account information, and off I went.

Simple. Easy. Effective.

Check out Gruml, currently in Beta.

Photoshop Mobile [Free iPhone apps iLike]

16 Jun

Didn’t get the best exposure on the last photo you took on your iPhone? Want to crop it a bit?

Want to convert it to black and white?

Features in Photoshop.Com mobile include:

- Crop, straighten, rotate and flip
- Adjust exposure, saturation, tint and contrast
- Apply filters such as sketch, soft focus and sharpen
- Add borders and other effects

In a mobile photo editing app, I find that I rarely need to go beyond this, and it’s a super photo editing staple.

Download the free Photoshop.Com app from the iTunes Store.

If you want to learn more about how to use the online Photoshop.Com web-based software for editing photos, check out this screencast from Sprint Arbor University (link via iTunes).

Note: Photoshop.com membership / signup IS NOT required to use the iPhone app.

We All Hate Aunt Flo [Period Tracker]

15 Jun

I have recently blogged about using email to track your period. It works a treat… but there is a free Period Tracking app, that allows you to predict when your next visit from mean old Aunt Flo will be.

We All Hate Aunt Flo [Period Tracker]

I’ve just started using it, so I’ll let you know how it goes in terms of accuracy on its period prediction, but features that I like include:

  • The ‘Period just started’ button. No messing around with dates
  • The ability to enter in previous periods
  • A calendar that shows when you’re fertile and when you ovulate

As you can see from the image above, looks like you need to avoid me on July 4th!!

Download Period Tracker from the Apple Store.

** UPDATE **

My sister in law recommends FertilityFriend’s Menstrual Calculator.  So now you have choice in tracking pesky Aunt Flo!

Thanks, Jo!
