Singapore Steps up on “handphone driving”

This week Singapore Traffic Police stepped up on what they called “handphone driving” – driving while using a mobile phone. I agree with this – seeing as it affects driving drastically (for the worst)… and I commend the traffic police on actually defining what it is:

Any communication via handphone earns 12 demerit points plus $2,000.00 fines (Singapore drivers’ licences have 24 demerit points). Mobile left on the seat earns 6 demerit – being that you should at no times be distracted by any wireless gadget.

What I find a bit rough, though, is that if you are caught, they can confiscate your phone as evidence (temporarily – fair enough), but you could lose it permanently if you are convicted!!!! Bloody hell!
